Currently the Robert Drinan, S.J., Professor and Director of the Initiative on Land, Housing & Property Rights at Boston College Law School, Mitchell is best known as the principal drafter of the Uniform Partition of Heirs Property Act (UPHPA) — landmark legislation enacted in 22 states, as well as the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands — that protects families from forced sales of of inherited homes and land. His work has helped protect billions in generational wealth, with a focus on the legal and policy barriers that disproportionately impact homeowners of color, low-income communities, and rural landowners.
